Antônio Carlos Bernardes was one of the great Brazilian humorists, popularly known as Mussum, nickname given to him by one of his great friends, Grande Otelo (who was also a humorist).

Mussum was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1941, son of Malvina Bernardes Gomes and Anísio Ribeiro da Costa, since he was little he was encouraged to study and this path he followed, until he obtained a mechanic degree.

Mussum's artistic career began at the same time he entered the job market, the artist played reco-reco in a group called "osmoderns do samba" and later formed his own group that became known as "Os originals do samba" , making success in Brazil and other countries in the 70's, the colorful clothes they wore was one of the main symbols of the group.

After spending some time in music Mussum, who already had a charisma that drew attention, he was invited to join a group of comedians and remained in it until his death.

Mussum was one of the great comedians that Brazil knew, he was very successful in a musical group and later joined “Trapalhões”, one of the largest and most enduring comedy groups in Brazil.

From an early age, Mussum learned that his education was of paramount importance, he finished primary school in 1954 and the following year he entered the boarding school at Fundação Abrigo Cristo Redentor, after completing it, he went to the Instituto Profissional Getúlio Vargas (affiliated with the aforementioned Foundation). ), where he obtained the diploma of mechanical fitter.

As soon as he graduated, Mussum got a job in the area and worked in a workshop in the northern region of Rio de Janeiro, after working for a while, Mussum joined the Air Force and stayed there for 8 years, concomitantly with his military service, the artist also He dedicated his life to art.

His musical group was widely known for its choreographies and colorful costumes and, in one of his performances, Mussum was invited to join a humor group.

From then on, the artist's success increased and little by little his schedule became tight, causing him to abandon his musical group.

Among the main achievements of Mussum's life, the following stands out:

  • Even after leaving his musical group, the actor did not stop dedicating himself to music, releasing three solo samba albums;
  • As a member of the trapalhões, he recorded more than 30 films;
  • All his life he dedicated himself to the samba school of Mangueira, being known locally as “Mumu da Mangueira”;
  • Worked in several social projects;
  • He was one of the creators of the “Criança Esperança” project, which until now raises funds for children and adolescents in different situations of vulnerability.

Acquaintances of the artist say that Mussum was what he was in any environment that was always in a good mood.

In addition, family members recall that he was always humble and supportive of others.

The comedian married Neila Gomes in 1976 and remained with her until the year of his death (1994), in this relationship he had three children.

One of the aspects that most marked Mussum's life, according to the writer of his biography, was the artist's duality of reactions, at the same time he was funny, he was also strict with his children.

In addition, he was very jealous of his wife, but had open extramarital affairs.

Mussum had four children, three with his wife (Paula, Augusto and Sandro) and one from an extramarital relationship (Antônio Carlos), assumed by the artist.

Antônio Carlos, was the only one who followed in his father's footsteps and works as an actor in Brazil, he even recorded a film with the Trapalhões.

There is confusion regarding the singer Mumuzinho, many people believe that he is the son of Mussum, including the singer said that he has already been asked to sing the songs of his “father”.

Mussum suffered from a serious heart condition called cardiomyopathy, which causes the heart to enlarge and not work properly. Therefore, he needed a heart transplant.

In July 1994, he was admitted to a hospital in São Paulo to undergo the transplant, the procedure went as expected and the comedian did not suffer acute rejection, which was the biggest risk of the surgery.

However, days later, the actor began to have negative symptoms, the first being blood clotting in the thoracic region and then he underwent another surgery.

On July 22, the comedian was diagnosed with a lung infection, five days later Mussum could not resist and died (on July 27, 1994).
